About the job
At Scaleway, we provide a wide range of products to our customers. From dedicated servers to virtual and bare metal cloud servers, storage solutions, and many other products, the Hardware Department is at the heart of the Scaleway infrastructure, offering over 100,000 servers from our own data centers to our customers and internal teams. The Hardware Department is responsible for most of the hardware activities of the company; from qualification to prototype, tool development to hardware support, and rack-level design.
The Systems development team is responsible for developing the in-house tools that will be used during the qualification phases, for quality checks, and for pre-production configuration and setup activities. The team's mission is to develop the best-in-class tools to automate deployments, improve overall quality and time to market, and optimize the cost-effectiveness of hardware assets.
As an Engineering manager, you will be responsible for both the management of your team of engineers and global engineering for the team. You can be involved in some day-to-day technical activities (software design, user support, programming, etc).
Responsibilities
- Organize the mid and long-term technical roadmap in collaboration with the VP Hardware Engineering
- Organize, prioritize, and maintain the team backlog
- Take part in the design and development of tools; keep your feet on the ground by participating as a "doer" in some specific software projects
- Bring in new ideas and methodologies, and make sure that the team uses the most efficient, secure, and up-to-date technologies
- Interact with the numerous teams involved: product teams, datacenter, production, and deployment coordinators, among others
- Ease collaboration with other Engineering teams
- Work on transversal initiatives within Scaleway's Engineering Manager Guild
- Coordinate, manage, support, and develop a team of DevOps engineers (career path, salary and compensation, personal knowledge and skills improvement)
Minimum qualifications
- 2+ years of mentoring technical profiles as a team lead or manager
- Good team spirit and leadership
- Communication / Synthesis / Reporting / Team KPI / Documentation: you are experienced with high-level reporting, and you know which piece of information is the most important
- Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
- Very good command of English
Minimum qualifications as a Development Engineer
- 5+ years of experience in software design and development
- Good knowledge of Object-Oriented programming, Python, SQL
- Good knowledge of computer hardware (servers & servers parts, network equipment)
- Good understanding of server administration (including firmware, UEFI, BMC, Grub, PXE, ...)
- Network configuration (Vlans, DHCP,...)
- Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
- Curious, meticulous, and methodical
It would be fantastic if you have some experience with:
- Hardware certification/testing
- Embedded system development
- Open Source Firmware stacks (e.g., OpenBMC, u-boot...) as a contributor or integrator
